Brick Calculator

How many bricks do you need for a wall, and how many should you buy? Use your brick’s actual visible face size, installed joint spacing and measured wall areas.

Brick quantity and purchasing only. This tool does not estimate mortar or design a structural wall.

Wall sections

Enter wall-face length and height in feet. Use quantity for identical walls.

Wall 1

Enter a positive whole number.

Openings to deduct (optional)

Doors, windows and other openings are simple rectangular area deductions from the combined wall area. If repeated walls each have matching openings, enter the total number of those openings. No lintels, arches, sills or special cuts are modeled.

No openings added. The full wall-face area is used.

Actual brick face and joint

Brick sizes vary. Confirm the actual face dimensions of the brick you plan to use. The dimensions below are an editable example, not a universal brick size.

Example: 7.625 in = 7 5/8 in. Use the visible face length.

Example: 2.25 in = 2 1/4 in. Use the visible face height.

Example: 0.375 in = 3/8 in. Joint spacing affects brick count; it does not estimate mortar quantity.

Brick depth is not needed for wall-face coverage. Enter decimal inches for the face dimensions and joint.

Extra bricks

Optional allowance can cover cuts, breakage and future replacement. Choose the percentage appropriate for your project. Zero is allowed; 10% is an editable example, not universally required.

Optional purchasing and prices

Optional quote for the calculated whole-brick quantity. Excludes delivery and tax.

Individual-brick and package prices are alternatives, not a combined total. The individual-brick quote covers the calculated count; the package quote covers whole packages.

Brick face + joint = installed module

Concept only, not to scale. Face length + one joint spacing = module length. Face height + one joint spacing = module height. The shaded strips allocate one joint per dimension, rather than adding a full joint on both sides.

Installed module area is (face length + joint) × (face height + joint), in square inches. Dividing 144 by that area gives estimated bricks per square foot. Net wall area × that rate gives the geometric brick estimate.

What this estimate includes

Wall sections sum their length × height × quantity. Openings deduct width × height × quantity once from the combined wall area. Waste is optional and user-controlled; no extra cut pattern is invented. If openings equal the gross wall area, the brick quantity is zero. Opening area greater than gross area is rejected.

No mortar quantity estimate

Mortar joint thickness changes installed spacing and brick count only. This calculator does NOT estimate mortar quantity, mortar bags, masonry cement, sand or mortar type. Mortar consumption varies with brick dimensions, wall construction, joint profile, bedding method, product and field conditions; no universal mortar-bag yield is used.

Understanding the estimate

This is a brick quantity and purchasing estimator. It does not determine structural wall design, brick bond/layout, reinforcement, lintels, flashing, wall ties, foundation requirements, code compliance or veneer attachment requirements. Follow project plans, manufacturer requirements and applicable codes. Openings are simple area deductions, not a model of brick orientation, arches, sills or special cuts.
