Ice Melt Calculator

Estimate how much ice melt, rock salt, or deicer you need for a driveway, sidewalk, parking area, or other paved surface.

Treatment Area

Application Plan

Application requirements vary significantly by product, pavement temperature, weather, and surface conditions. Always follow the product label. More material is not necessarily more effective.

How the Ice Melt Calculator Works

The calculator finds the treatment area and multiplies it by the selected application rate. It then accounts for the number of planned applications and your chosen reserve percentage.

Pounds Needed = Area ÷ 1,000 × Application Rate

Choosing an Application Rate

Ice-melt performance depends on the product, pavement temperature, air temperature, precipitation, traffic, and whether it is applied before or after ice forms. Use the rate printed on the product label whenever it differs from the general planning rates shown here.

Using Ice Melt Responsibly

Excess deicer can be tracked indoors and may affect concrete, metal, landscaping, waterways, and pets. Remove loose snow first, spread the product evenly, and avoid applying more than the product instructions recommend.
