How Much Granular Lawn Product Do I Need?
Multiply the lawn’s treatment area by the product-label rate per 1,000 square feet. A lawn measuring 8,000 square feet at a rate of 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet requires 24 pounds of product for one application.
How Many Bags Should I Buy?
Divide the total product required by the net weight of one bag, then round up to the next whole bag. When planning several permitted applications, calculate the total product needed across all applications before rounding the purchase quantity.
How Much Area Does One Bag Cover?
Bag coverage depends on both the bag weight and the application rate. The same 20-pound bag covers 10,000 square feet at 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet, but only 5,000 square feet at 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
Measuring the Lawn Treatment Area
Divide an irregular lawn into rectangles, triangles, or other manageable sections and add their areas together. Exclude the house, driveway, patio, pool, garden beds, ponds, and any other surfaces that should not receive the product.
Why the Label Rate Matters
Granular products may have different rates for different pests, weeds, nutrients, treatment sites, or application schedules. Never assume the rate printed prominently on the package applies to every permitted use. Read the complete directions for the intended application.
Spreader Settings and Calibration
A spreader setting controls the opening of the equipment; it is not itself an application rate. Settings vary by spreader, product granule size, walking speed, and equipment condition. Follow the product and spreader instructions and calibrate the equipment when required.
Granular Product Safety
Wear the protective equipment specified by the label. Keep the product away from children, pets, food, wells, drains, waterways, and surfaces not listed for treatment. Follow directions for watering, cleanup, reentry, storage, and disposal, and sweep granules from hard surfaces back onto the permitted treatment area.
