How Is a Perimeter Pest-Treatment Area Calculated?

The horizontal ground band is the rectangular ring surrounding the building. Its area equals the outside dimensions of the building plus the band on every side, minus the building’s footprint.

Ground-band area = (length + 2 × band width) × (width + 2 × band width) − (length × width)

How Is the Foundation-Wall Area Calculated?

The foundation treatment area is estimated by multiplying the building perimeter by the planned vertical treatment height. Enter zero for the height when no vertical wall area should be included.

Foundation-wall area = building perimeter × treatment height

How Much Finished Spray Is Needed?

Pesticide labels may state an application volume in gallons of finished spray per 1,000 square feet. Multiply the calculated treatment area by that rate to estimate the total finished solution.

Finished spray = treatment area ÷ 1,000 × application gallons

How Much Pesticide Concentrate Is Needed?

Multiply the finished spray volume by the label’s permitted concentrate amount per gallon. For example, 4 gallons of finished spray at 1 fluid ounce of concentrate per gallon requires 4 fluid ounces of concentrate.

Concentrate needed = finished spray gallons × concentrate per gallon

How Many Sprayer Tanks Are Needed?

Divide the total finished spray volume by the sprayer capacity. Any remainder requires a final partial tank. The final tank should be mixed in the same labeled proportion as a full tank.

Ground Bands and Foundation Treatments

A product label may permit different widths, heights, application volumes, or methods depending on the pest and treatment site. Do not assume that a commonly used perimeter dimension applies to every product. Confirm the permitted dimensions and rate before entering them.

Wear the personal protective equipment specified by the label. Keep people and pets away for the required period, prevent drift and runoff, and observe restrictions around doors, windows, air intakes, edible plants, wells, drains, waterways, and flowering plants visited by pollinators.
